What is up with South Dakota?

As if it wasn’t bad enough that there is only one abortion provider in the entire state of South Dakota (and while not terribly populated, it’s a BIG state), SD now requires abortion doctors to read a statement that includes such unproven “facts” as abortions increase your risk of suicide. In a truly bizarre twist of logic, the state argues that this is about informed consent. Meanwhile, clinic doctors are trying to find ways to comply with the law without lying to their patients. What a mess.

Meanwhile, in the state of Colorado, the populace is getting ready to vote on an initiative that would define life as beginning at conception and would guarantee the unborn fetus the full complement of human rights (most of which are not granted to full grown adults in this country, but hey somebody should have them).

And in the great state of Indiana, the antis are going county by county to require abortion providers to have hospital admitting privileges. A rule that could pose serious threats where the only hospital is owned/run by Catholic organization. Oddly, the one county in which such an ordinance has passed has no abortion providers. But the antis are happy that this will make it harder for an abortion clinic to open.

All of which goes to show that Roe v. Wade is really not all it’s cracked up to be. Millions of women are still denied access to abortion (or have to hop over absurd bureaucratic hurdles to obtain one). If it wasn’t so frightening and maddening, the state of reproductive freedom in this country would be funny.
