March 2008 - just shut up

gay folks should just shut up

According to Oregon State Senator Gary George. He’s opposed to Oregon’s new non-discrimination law, which makes it illegal to discriminate against folks because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. He’s co-sponsoring an initiative to repeal the law.

Apparently, living without discrimination based on who you are attracted to (or based on your gender presentation) is a ’special right.’ I guess we should all have the right to discriminate against whoever we want to based on any criteria that we come up with.

Personally, I think I’m going to start discriminating against white boys over the age of 45 who wear ties. They are the ones who, for the most part, got us in this mess of a society to begin with. Who do they think they are that they deserve special rights?

This interview with Just Out is instructive. Of course, if gay people want to be open about their lives and their loved ones, they should *expect* there to be a violent backlash.

Goddess help Mr. George if anyone ever catches him having a private life in a public space!!

Don’t you just love it when the white boys complain that anyone who wants the same privileges that they have, those folks are clamoring for ’special rights.’ My other favorite part is where he says that gays are oppressive to straights. Crikey, the ignorance is mind-blowing really. Those poor straight folks, so oppressed, they are pressured to get married and everything! Of course, they could always CHOOSE to be gay instead!

I’m embarrassed, quite frankly, that this person is an elected official in my state. Thank the goddess he’s not from around where I live (that poor community, at least, I hope that he’s destroyed his political career with this stupidity).

In this day and age, I cannot, simply cannot, believe the bigotry and hatred.

This will be the second time that these hate-mongers have tried to repeal the Oregon Equality Act through the initiative process. The last time they failed to gather enough signatures. I was a little bummed. I kinda want to see their ad campaign to try to get folks to vote for this: “Protect Your Right to Hate and Discriminate!”

Except that it would be a monumental waste of time and energy, I’d almost look forward to messing with the campaign. Staging “Preserve Discrimination in Oregon” rallies could be quite fun!

I mean, really. I can sort of understand that some fundamentalist wingnuts don’t like gay folks because their god decrees them unholy or whatever - I mean, I think it’s silly and don’t really believe any deity would be so hateful, but some people like their gods mean and vengeful- but I don’t understand this sense of entitlement, that just because my god doesn’t like your people that should give me the right to treat you with less respect.

When are these people going to grow up?

What gives me hope these days is that a lot of this hatred and bigotry seems to be aging out (at least for some folks, seems it’s still ok to hate muslims and folks of middle eastern descent). I think that younger folks are more able to live with differences. But, of course, that could just be where I live…
